Usually I expect more than a month leave for every semester in college, but this sounded really harsh to me. Can be accounted as the first hardship that IT Industry had to impose upon me (one of the “To Become” – victims).

So i had decided to have a blast because we never know will we be having those joyful moments once again in the life. My sisters had come to see me, perhaps knowing the fact that they can never be again with me for 15days time freely.

So we all roamed around Coimbatore, visiting places as much as possible, and while going to some of them, really a question haunted me, “If I would be able to come back again here with my family for some time ?” . Sounds really tough to answer but I consoled myself saying “It may be possible”. Then we did a lot of shopping, bought all the things necessary for a massive 6 month training period. We saw as much movies as possible at home.

The date of joining was nearing and the pressure never seemed to alleviate.Every night seemed to be long as we were discussing how the training period would be and all stuff. It was heard that Infosys had stringent training policies and if we are not going to satisfy it we will be given what every software engineer dreads of -a pink slip. News was coming from many blogs, websites of how to prepare for the training and how to crack it.

Added to those pressure was the pressure from relatives. They were all saying the stories of how their neighbour's or sons/daughters had cleared the training and doing well. This is the main problem in families because you alone do not lose respect when you are failing in exams but your parents also lose respect in the relatives circle and the neigbour's circle. So there is only one option for me -Clear the training and get a good posting. These were the burdens i had to carry in my heart before i step into that wonderful campus of Infosys Mysore which i had only seen in pics in my computer till June 6,2009.

We got information from Infy via mails on life at Mysore for trainees, the 6.5 months period, what is necessary to be bought, how our rooms would be etc. The first thing one you notice there is a dress code that has to be followed once you enter into corporate world. And that dress code is only applicable to guys and not for the girls. You have to wear full sleeves formal shirts, formal pants, a tie and shining shoes whose color has to match the belt you are wearing and most importantly washed socks. You can no more wear those stinking socks which we wash once in a week or fortnight. The shirts and pants should be neatly ironed. There was one respite however, you can come in casuals on fridays and weekends. But for girls they have to wear decent dresses(though most of them din't comply to that also) and no shoes for them. The bias really kills me. Why for girls alone? You have to walk only in pavements inside the campus and not on roads and have to follow queues in food courts. And for the first time in life all these rules and restrictions seemed alien to many of those in campus.

PavanKumarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07520649326425519039noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-78068270286270475.post-42954040029683733022009-04-11T00:48:00.000-07:002009-04-11T00:55:40.549-07:0010 Sticky Job Interview Situations and How to Handle Them

Job interviewing can be an unnerving experience, but if you know how to handle some of the stickiest situations encountered in interviewing, you can be that much more confident. Here are 10 of the stickiest.

1. The Bad Interviewer : Not every professional who conducts job interviews with candidates knows how to conduct an interview effectively. In fact some are downright lousy at it. A bad interviewer might be unfocused, disinterested, unprepared. He or she might dominate the interview by doing all the talking or might ask inappropriate and illegal questions.

The unfocused, unprepared interviewer probably hasn't read your resume and maybe can't even find a copy. This hapless soul doesn't even know what to ask you. Be sure to offer this disorganized interviewer a copy of your resume while asking, “May I take you through some highlights of my career?”

While the bigmouth interviewer is holding forth, make as many mental notes as you can (or jot them down if you've brought a small notepad). Don't show your exasperation; instead be an attentive listener and hang on the interviewer's every word. Try to get a word in edgewise by leaning forward and opening your mouth slightly. If that doesn't work, even a nonstop talker will likely eventually ask if you have any questions. At that point, you can ask questions or describe your fit with the company and the position based on the mental notes you've been making.

For inappropriate and illegal questions, see No. 6 below and try your hardest to keep the interview focused on your qualifications for the job.

2. The "Tell Me about Yourself" Question : Of course, this question is not a question at all but a request for a command performance. It's the most commonly asked interview question, yet it frequently still rattles interviewees. The trick is to make your response a succinct summary of information that is specifically targeted to the job you're interviewing for. (Sell yourself!) For example:

"My background to date has been centered around preparing myself to become the very best financial consultant I can become. Let me tell you specifically how I've prepared myself. I am an undergraduate student in finance and accounting at ___________ University. My past experience has been in retail and higher education. Both aspects have prepared me well for this career."

The interviewer is not looking for your autobiography and probably is not interested in your personal life unless aspects of it are relevant to the job you're interviewing for.

3. The "Weakness" Question: The conventional wisdom about responding to “What are your weaknesses?” used to be that the candidate should spin a weakness into a strength. For example: “I'm a perfectionist and don't believe anyone can do the job as well as I can, so I sometimes have a hard time delegating.” That type of response has, however, worn out its welcome with interviewers. Other approaches include offering a weakness that is inconsequential to the job (such as being a poor speller and relying on spellcheck) or denying that you have any weaknesses that would stand in the way of your performing the job effectively. The former approach may work but be seen as shallow, while the latter sometimes lacks credibility. After all, everyone has a weakness.

An approach that seems to work well is to talk about an area that was once a weakness but that you have worked to improve. Here's how you could frame the perfectionist example above in terms of professional growth: "I tend to be a perfectionist who has had trouble delegating tasks to others, but I've come to see that teamwork and capitalizing on everyone's strengths is a much more effective way to get the job done than trying to do it all myself."

4. The "Why should I hire you?" Question: The unspoken part of this question is: “Why should I hire you [above all the other candidates]?” This is your chance to shine, to really make a sales pitch for yourself. Use your Unique Selling Proposition to describe what sets you apart from other candidates. The employer will make a significant investment in hiring and training you, so tell the interviewer that this investment will be justified. For example, you could say: "I sincerely believe that I'm the best person for the job. Like other candidates, I have the ability to do this job. But beyond that ability, I offer an additional quality that makes me the very best person for the job -- my drive for excellence. Not just giving lip service to excellence, but putting every part of myself into achieving it. Throughout my career, I have consistently strived to become the very best I can become. The success I've attained in my management positions is the result of possessing the qualities you're looking for in an employee."

5. "Off-the-wall" Questions, also known as "Wild Card" or "No-Right-Answer" Questions : Occasionally you'll be asked an interview question that's just downright weird and certainly doesn't seem to have anything to do with the job -- for example, a question like this: "If you were an ice-cream cone, what flavor would you be?" Interviewers often ask these oddball questions to see how quickly you can think on your feet and whether you can avoid becoming flustered. Others, unfortunately, ask them because they enjoy seeing interviewees squirm. Still others are amused by the range of creative -- and not-so-creative -- responses they receive.

Don't let an off-the-wall question rattle you. Take a moment to gather your thoughts and respond the best way you can. There is rarely a wrong answer to this type of question, but quick-thinking candidates can turn the response into an opportunity to impress the employer. A response given by one of my former students has always stuck in my head as being a standout answer. The question was: "If you were a superhero, what would be your super powers, and why?" His response: "I think I would prefer to be a superhero like Batman, who doesn't have superpowers per se, but who relies on his intelligence and use of the right tools to get the job done."

6. Illegal Questions: It's illegal to ask about age, marital status, children, childcare arrangements, and the like, but employers still do -- or come up with subtle ways to ask, such as by inquiring about when you graduated from high school/college. It's best to address the concern behind the question rather than the question itself by saying something like: "There is nothing about my personal status that would get in the way of my doing a great job for your company." While it may also be tempting to point out the illegality of the question, doing so likely won't endear you to the interviewer.

7. Salary Questions: As a screening device, interviewers often ask early in the interview what salary you are looking for. If you ask for more than the employer is willing to pay (or occasionally, on the flip side, undervalue yourself), the interviewer can eliminate you before spending a lot of time with you. That's why the best tactic for salary questions is to delay responding to them as long as possible -- ideally until after the employer makes an offer. Try to deflect salary questions with a response like this: "I applied for this position because I am very interested in the job and your company, and I know I can make an immediate impact once on the job, but I'd like to table salary discussions until we are both sure I'm right for the job." Read more in our Salary Negotiation and Job Offer Tutorial.

8. Questions about Being Terminated from a Previous Job: It's always uncomfortable to be asked your reasons for leaving a job from which you were terminated. Don't lie about it, but don't dwell on it either. You could explain that you and the company were not a good fit, hence your performance suffered. Or that you and your supervisor had differing viewpoints. Emphasize what you learned from the experience that will prevent you from repeating it and ensure that you will perform well in the future. Read more about handling termination.

9. Questions about Reasons for Leaving a Current Job: This question is similar to the previous question, even if you haven't been fired. Responses about fit with the company and differing views from your supervisor can also work here, but remember never to trash a current employer. Always speak positively about past and present employers even if your experience has not been positive with them. Another good response in this situation is to say that you determined you had grown as much as you could in that job and you are ready for new challenges.

10. Questions about the Future: Interviewees are often asked, "Where do you see yourself in five (or 10) years?" Strike a delicate balance when responding to this kind of question, with just the right mix of honesty, ambition, and your desire to be working at this company long-term.

Avoid responses such as starting your own business, running for Congress, which suggest that you don't plan to stay with the company.

It's not totally inappropriate to mention the personal (marriage, family), but focus mainly on professional goals. Mention your career and company goals first, and tack on any mention of marriage and family at the end.

Your response could be: "I'm here to let you know that I am the best person for the job. If in the future you feel I would be a candidate for a higher level position, I know I wouldn't be passed up."

OR: "I hope to stay at the company and expect that in five years, I'll make a significant advance in the organization."

OR: "I would like to become the very best ______________ your company has."

And then there's my personal favorite, which a student told me a friend had used. Asked by the interviewer, "Where do you see yourself in five years?" The response: "Celebrating the five-year anniversary of your asking me this question!" While the response probably made the interviewer laugh, it's probably not the best answer.

Final thoughts:

Job-seekers need to think of each interview question as an opportunity to showcase an accomplishment or strength. Every response should build momentum toward convincing the interviewer that you deserve to advance to the next level, whether that level is another round of interviews or a job offer.

All the best for your interviews...

Good Luck..
Pavan Kumar.RPavanKumarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07520649326425519039noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-78068270286270475.post-75830380216832000022009-01-22T07:44:00.000-08:002009-01-22T07:47:11.687-08:00Few Links for ur benefit
Higher Studies Aims!!!!
Here is some ammo for your higher education ambitions

The failure to predict the downside was unanimous: even respected regulators like the US Fed, the European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan were unsuccessful in pre-empting the downfall and taking timely preventive action. The global banking community also read the situation incorrectly, as was evident in risky lending practices and in erroneous valuations. For instance, the price paid by a Royal Bank of Scotland led consortium for the acquisition of ABN Amro Bank NV last year is today more than the combined market cap of some of the leading banks in the world. Excessive leverage, unwarranted risk taking, and reckless lending laid the groundwork for a banking crisis that pulled the entire global economy down, thereby exposing investors to extreme risk and significantly eroding investor wealth. Double whammy In the first half of 2008, the Indian economy fell victim to high oil prices, which translated into higher trade deficit, weaker rupee, higher inflation, higher subsidy burden, higher fiscal deficit, and lower growth. In the second half of 2008, the economy felt the impact of the global financial turmoil. The situation deteriorated further when foreign institutional investors (FIIs) began unwinding their investments in emerging markets, including India, in the wake of the liquidity crisis. This led to tightening liquidity, crashing commodity prices, and slowdown in demand. As a result, the estimated GDP growth rate has come down from above 8 per cent to about 6 per cent for FY 2008-09. While the situation could have deteriorated further, prompt intervention by the regulators through aggressive interest-rate cuts, liquidity infusion, and increased infrastructure spending provided the necessary buffer for the Indian economy. Looking ahead In 2009, events, more than fundamentals, will play a critical part. The year will begin with the baggage of 2008. The global financial turmoil will keep capital flows in check. The pressure on the RBI to ease monetary policy further and on the government to provide more fiscal stimulus will continue. Corporate profitability will be impacted by the troika of volume decline, margin pressure, as well as treasury losses. Factors like tight liquidity conditions for small- and medium-sized corporates and high interest rates for private corporates and individual consumers will continue to dent demand. Apart from these, the general elections that are on the anvil, the memory of the recent terror attacks, and general risk aversion in the country will act as dampeners at the beginning of 2009. The markets will have to overcome all these uncertainties before any signs of a rally become visible. Quite a few positives However, all is not gloom and doom at the end of the year; there are a few encouraging trends as well. Prices of food, oil, urea, etc have fallen. Inflation continues to decline towards comfortable levels, interest rates have softened, and good monsoons are expected to provide a fillip to India s rural and agricultural economy. All these factors are expected to provide the necessary fillip in 2009, making the overall outlook positive. Let us look at some interesting statistics that add to the optimistic outlook for India in the forthcoming years: • Foreign direct investment (FDI) is averaging about USD 10 billion per quarter since January 2008. If this continues, it could pull the Indian economy into a higher orbit, like China s in the eighties. • Drop in interest rates can help save about USD 2 billion in interest payments. • The RBI has about USD 235 billion in forex reserves to ward off external threats and USD 60 billion of liquidity to pump into the economy in CY 2009. • Though there was substantial correction in the equity markets, wealth destruction for retail investors was relatively low as retail ownership of equity was between 10-15 per cent of market cap. Indians large holding of gold helped mitigate the impact of the stock market decline. • With the surplus economies of the western world suffering from near-zero returns in their countries, capital may search for better returns in markets like India. • Indian corporates are significantly under-leveraged as compared to the past and also compared to global peers. • India has a savings and investment rate of more than 30 per cent which is capable of supporting a 7 per cent plus GDP growth rate in the coming years. FDI will help accelerate growth, but even without it the base growth rate will continue. 2009 will be a turnaround year and will be decisive for those enagaged in long-term wealth creation. With valuations having corrected significantly and being cheap at around 10 times normalised earnings, investment opportunities abound for those with a three- to five-year horizon. With the comfort of the Indian growth rate being much higher than that of most global peers, capitalise on the present opportunity and benefit from the long-term growth outlook of India. u The author is deputy managing director, ICICI (ICICIBANK.NS : 471.25 +7.1) Prudential AMC

Author: Nilesh Shah
Source : Indian Express FinancePavanKumarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07520649326425519039noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-78068270286270475.post-57544876284158595642009-01-01T01:59:00.000-08:002009-01-01T02:28:59.551-08:00Salary for B.E. That's understandable. Managers are under pressure to deliver results, team members are worried about job security, and everyone has one eye trained on the news. Pushed to deliver breakthrough solutions and game-changing ideas, employees are in a bind.

Maybe it's time to give workers a mental bailout. Managers who note the pressure-cooker conditions and their effect on productivity can ease the strain and create intellectual and emotional breathing room for their employees by declaring a Production Bankruptcy Day.

What's that? It's a day when no "real work" gets done. Every deadline is pushed back by 24 hours. No meetings are scheduled. E-mails are allowed to go unanswered, phones to ring, BlackBerrys to chirp.

Employees still show up, but they use their time to dig out, reorganize, and de-clutter their workstations and their minds. They also gather to brainstorm, to talk about everything and nothing, and generally restart the rat-race clock with a deep breath and some fruitful (and normally impossible) thinking.

Offer prizes for the most unusual item uncovered in the group cleaning (e.g., an old floppy disk or a dog bone), most industrial-size garbage cans filled by an employee, or the most colorful filing system. Bring whimsical, inexpensive prizes and have fun awarding them throughout the day.

Tell workers it's O.K. to do things the old-fashioned way that day. Encourage them to write notes, make phone calls, and think about reducing the electronic information overload when they get back to "normal." This is a good time for people to rethink their habits and start new ones. That could mean fewer e-mails and more phone calls, fewer recipients on e-mail lists, and walking down the hall to resolve an issue instead of hitting "reply" to the 500th e-mail of the morning.

Is your team in need of a bailout? Are you prepared to declare Production Bankruptcy Day to get the mental juices flowing and give burnt-out workers a break and a battery charge? Click here for ideas to make your no-production day as productive as possible.

Source : Business Week Online

Author: Liz RyanPavanKumarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07520649326425519039noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-78068270286270475.post-81753755450915579742008-12-27T06:15:00.000-08:002008-12-27T06:24:55.844-08:00The future of open source (InfoWorld)
There's no question that the open source community is a passionate one -- and one with significant influence on technology directions and options. We're way past the days when people asked if Linux or Apache was safe to depend on in business. Open source is now a mainstream part of the technology fabric.

Yet it remains connected to its roots around a passionate community working together to solve problems and share the fruits of their labors with others. Any endeavor based in community is bound to spark passionate debate. After all, without contention, how else to determine the best way forward?

Since its emergence, open source has embodied this spirit. Part defiant, part self-reliant, and often outspoken and opinionated, those immersed in the community have worked both in tandem and at odds, all with the intention of pushing the movement in as many worthwhile directions at once.

It's so worthwhile that the drumbeat of business can now be heard in nearly every corner of community, drawing the attention of vendors and capitalists alike. And with greater attention and potential has come a measure of added strife. Questions of selling out and just desserts surface more frequently, yet not to the jeopardy of the endeavor, as the code keeps proliferating, thanks to those who participate.

Given the increased reliance on open source by users and commercial vendors, as well as by the commercialization of some open source projects, InfoWorld spoke with 11 thought leaders in a roundtable discussion about the current open source climate to uncover the most vibrant themes and conflicts shaping open source today.

From pioneers Bruce Perens and Eric S. Raymond to technology strategists at Google, IBM, and Microsoft to the new guard of entrepreneurs and developers working to transform projects into products, each expert sheds ample light on the opportunities and pitfalls ahead.PavanKumarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07520649326425519039noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-78068270286270475.post-78276564004835628222008-12-25T04:41:00.001-08:002008-12-25T04:42:39.205-08:00Railway Status on your MobileIndian Railway in collaboration with Google is now providing a 10 digit

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has lined up a slew of missions which also include landing a spacecraft on an asteroid and sending a probe to fly past a comet.
ISRO plans to send an Indian astronaut in space onboard a Russian mission in 2013 and follow it up with two Indian astronauts on a seven-day mission on an indigenously developed rocket in 2015. India's mission to Mars is at a conceptual stage right now, ISRO Chairman G Madhavan Nair told PTI on the sidelines of a felicitation of the Chandrayaan-I team by CII. "Next year we will be able to finalise and by 2013 it can take off," he said.

Nair said the current Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV), used to put communications satellites in orbit, will be used to launch the probe to Mars. ISRO also plan to launch a sequel to Chandrayaan-I, which will entail landing a rover robot on moon by 2012.

The lunar rover will be built in collaboration with Russia. "The design for Chandrayaan-II is ready," Nair said.

Last year, ISRO had sent to space a capsule which was recovered after keeping in orbit for 22 days. The Space Recovery Experiment (SRE) was seen as a technology demonstrator for future manned missions.

News Source: Press Trust of India

PavanKumarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07520649326425519039noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-78068270286270475.post-54411490815580121292008-12-23T21:58:00.000-08:002008-12-23T21:59:45.579-08:00Cops without borders

As part of the institutional changes needed to combat terrorism, our government has announced the setting up of a new federal investigating agency. This is fundamentally a good move. Criminals and terrorists do not respect state borders. Veerappan was able to operate for so long because he moved back and forth between states cleverly taking advantage of the lack of coordination between state bureaucracies. State governments have under-invested in police forces. Expenditure for the police has been classified by our mandarins as a "non-plan" expense. Whenever there are fiscal shortfalls, as is always the case for every state, police budgets get slashed. We have far fewer police personnel as a proportion of our population than we did 60 years ago and our numbers are proportionately far lower than most other countries. Our police is underpaid (exposing them to the temptations of corruption) and under-equipped. We have no data bases worth talking about. If you commit a crime in one neighbourhood and move to the next one, you can easily disappear. The police stations do not communicate in real time and there is no integrated data base. We now know (tragically!) how poorly armed and protected our police force is. But that is only the tip of the iceberg. Our police procedures are trapped in 19th-century colonial straitjackets. Criminals and terrorists operate in the 21st-century world with aplomb. An efficient, modern, well-funded federal agency is certainly worthwhile.

However, we run the risk of adding one more agency to the laundry list of the CBI, the IB and the RAW, with endless turf battles and bureaucratic wrangling. We also run the risk of state police forces not working in coordination with the federal agency, sowing the seeds of gridlock. Many state governments are apprehensive of a new agency. Given the alleged misuse of agencies like the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate to target political opponents, such fears are not misplaced. It is therefore of the greatest importance that we get the eco-system around the new agency right. Otherwise down the road having wasted crores of rupees we may end up worse off than where we are today.

One of the noteworthy features of free India is that agencies which have been granted constitutional autonomy have performed relatively well. Our independent judiciary, despite its ills, has retained credibility across sections of society as a defender of our liberties. The Comptroller and Auditor General (an official with a six-year term and autonomy guaranteed by the Constitution) started off well. Our first CAG, the redoubtable Narahari Rao, took on the arrogant Krishna Menon despite the latter being the then PM's favourite. While in recent times the CAG's office has not lived up to its promise, the Election Commission has gone from strength to strength emerging as a credible independent institution of high integrity and competence. The state governments despite misgivings abide by the commission's rulings. The voters trust this institution. The technology of our voting machines is world class and rugged (it has to be in order to function in a country with a pathetic infrastructure). The EC's use of technology stands in stark contrast to our police forces.

If our government wishes to ensure that the new federal agency works efficiently and does not get destroyed by turf battles, the best solution is to make it an institution with constitutionally guaranteed autonomy. The director of this agency (and perhaps a few deputies) should be given fixed six or seven year terms and not transferred every year based on short-term whimsical considerations. This will ensure stability in management, which is a prerequisite for building a competent organisation. Fixed terms are better than frequent changes or very long terms. Edgar Hoover, the FBI director in the US who had a virtually endless term, abused his powers and brought disrepute to the government itself. We need to avoid that trap. All political parties have a stake in an autonomous institution if for no other reason than to ensure that they are not victimised when in the opposition. They should therefore be willing to support a constitutional amendment in this regard. If our political parties remain short-sighted (as is most likely) a second order optimality can be achieved by at least making the agency autonomous by statute. In recent times, we have seen that the SEBI and the RBI, with their statutory autonomy, have in fact been citadels of both competence and public credibility.

Setting up a federal agency is at best a first step. Whichever way we look at it, improving the police infrastructure in the states is a must. Given the tricky political battles involved, the best solution is to imitate the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). Urban reform and development is slowly getting attention from the states simply because that's the only way they can access JNNURM funds. Rather than mandate changes, the federal agency should generously fund those states that reform their police systems and upgrade their technology. Such funding should definitely be considered "plan" expenditure and should not be tied to the states raising incremental resources (which they never will). This will have the added advantage of the emergence of an eco-system where the state police will automatically cooperate with the federal agency rather than fight it.

Lastly, we need to use the opportunity created by the present crisis to improve the morale of our IPS officers. They have legitimate grievances that they do not have promotion prospects similar to their IAS counterparts. It is said that even the most unworthy Applebys in the IAS get to the rank of secretary by retirement date, ensuring good compensation and a good pension. The IPS concerns are not that different from those of the officers of the armed forces. For a very small real cost to the fisc (and indeed trivial in comparison to the national savings that will result from reduced terrorist activity) these issues can be addressed. For once let's act generously with our fellow citizens in uniform and not take recourse to setting up one more committee.

Article Source: Indian Express

Author : Jaithirth "Jerry" Rao

PavanKumarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07520649326425519039noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-78068270286270475.post-1472672879516202942008-12-23T21:50:00.000-08:002008-12-23T21:54:10.486-08:00India targets $58 billion software export this fiscal

The ninth edition of the largest IT global networking event in India, INDIASOFT 2009, to be held in Kolkata, is targeting the new emerging markets of South Africa, Spain, France and Germany for software exports and services.

Last fiscal, the country exported software worth $45 billion and the target this fiscal is around $58 billion.
